The Medical Psychology--Neuropsychology Prgram at NPIH has a rich history--dating back to 1958....

The Medical Psychology Program was founded by Ivan Mensh in 1958 and he continued to direct the program until 1986.  Dr. Mensh was an international leader in the founding of Medical Psychology as a specialty, and Gerontology as a discipline.  He continued to serve in Emeritus status, and contributed actively to the programs until shortly before his death in 2005.

Irene Goldenberg directed Medical Psychology from 1986 to 2002.   Dr. Goldenberg, a prominent international figure in Marriage and Family Therapy, oversaw the expansion of training programs and simultaneously directed psychology programs in the Child Division.

The Neuropsychology Program was founded by Dr. Paul Satz in 1986.  Dr. Satz established one of the world's leading fellowship programs in Neuropsychology, with both clinical and research emphases.  Dr. Satz was among the founding members of the Association of Post-Doctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology.

In 2002, the programs in Medical Psychology and Neuropsychology were combined under the leadership of Dr. Robert M. Bilder.
